David Crosby and Neil Young were among the most important musical artists of the ’70s and’ 80s. When their talents combined in the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young supergroup, their talent pool seemed limitless. After a disastrous fall-out, however, it seems unlikely the couple will work together again. Crosby recently revisited the feud, calling Young the most selfish person he knows.

In 1964, Crosby was a founding member of The Byrds, a California rock band known for their catchy lyricism. After Crosby was kicked out of the band for being “a hole” he formed the folk group Crosby, Stills & Nash with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. Later in 1969, Young joined the trio, forming Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
The band’s braided harmonies and politically active lyrics defined the music they produced. They first broke up after touring in 1970, but reunited in 1974. The band have reunited several times for a tour, but haven’t worked together since 2014, when Crosby called the girlfriend of Young, now wife, Darryl Hannah, a “purely poisonous predator”.
David Crosby spoke about the notoriously messy falling out
In an interview with The Guardian, Crosby reflected on the long-standing feud between the former groupmates.
âNeil has a real beef,â he said. “I said something bad about his girlfriend [the actor Daryl Hannah, now Youngâs wife]. I said I thought she was a predator. OK, he may be mad at me. It’s OK.”
Although Crosby has apologized for his comments, the dynamic between the two remains icy. While Crosby notes his fault in the falling out, he still has less than sunny feelings towards Young.
âI’m a very liberal guy and a modern political thinker. Neil doesn’t really play politics. He does Neil, âCrosby said. He further clarified his comments, adding, “He’s probably the most egotistical, self-centered, and selfish person I know. He only thinks of Neil, period. He is the only person he will consider. Already!”
Crosby is so firm in this belief that he even thinks Young would agree. When asked if he thought Young considered himself selfish, Crosby replied, âProbably. He knows himself quite well.
A meeting is unlikely, but not impossible
Although the dynamic between the two musicians is still tense, they have both spoken of a possible reunion in the past.
âI want to work with the four of us. This is what I want to do, âsaid Crosby The Envelope in 2019. âI’ll be blamed more than anyone for leading my friends in this group. “
Young seems a bit more reluctant than Crosby but still isn’t entirely closed to the idea.
âCrosby should write an introspective book: Why people won’t talk to me anymore,” he said AARP. âIf a meeting were to take place, it would be a surprise. I won’t close the door on anything. I can hold a grudge against the best of them, but only if there’s a reason for it.
