A budding teen rock band is aiming for heavy metal stardom in new trailer for Metal Lords. Slated for release on Netflix, the film comes from the producers of game of thrones and Harold and Kumar and is expected to bow on April 8. Ahead of the streaming debut, you can watch the official trailer for metal lords for a good preview of the film.
Metal Lords is directed by Peter Sollett and written by DB Weiss. Greg Shapiro and Weis produced with Tom Morello serving as executive music producer. The film stars Jaeden Martell, Isis Hainsworth, Adrian Greensmith, Sufe Bradshaw, Noah Urrea, Analesa Fisher, Michelle Fang, Phelan Davis, with Brett Gelman and Joe Manganiello.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Two kids want to start a heavy metal band at a high school where exactly two kids have an interest in heavy metal. Hunter (Adrian Greensmith) is a die-hard metal fan – are there any – who else? – who knows his story and can shred. His dream in life is to win the next Battle of the Bands. He hires his best friend Kevin (Jaeden Martell) on drums. But with bandmates from class more interested in Bieber than Black Sabbath, finding a bassist is a struggle.Until Kevin catches Emily (Isis Hainsworth) killing her cello. The ragtag team must contend with school, parents , hormones, and teenage angst while trying to get along long enough for Skullf*cker to win the battle of the bands.”
DB Weiss is now dealing with something quite different from dragons
DB Weiss entered this project under a lot of pressure after his work on the hit series game of thrones. This film marks his first major project with Netflix after signing a lucrative deal with the streamer. As a coming-of-age story about teenage rockers, it’s very different from what Weiss got used to when crafting the story for something like the thrones series. Notably, grounding this new story in reality was the biggest shift.
“If you’re dealing with reality, it’s so much easier to get it wrong,” says producer DB Weiss, who adapted game of thrones for HBO with David Benioff. “Nobody can really say, ‘Nobody would ever have these shoes in Westeros,’ because there’s no Westeros. If something doesn’t work, you can’t say that a giant visual effects extravaganza will arrive in five minutes to wipe their memory of this scene. These giant, horrible and wonderful man-made creations are not here to save you.
He added: “The thing you had to believe that didn’t totally make sense at the time was that kids who were heavily invested in rock music would be outliers as far as kids are in this movie. What happened unintentionally in the years between, that part of the story was starting to make more and more sense and that kind of music was moving further and further away from the mainstream.” Hunter now feels like “a weird, aberrant dinosaur” to Weiss, but it’s a testament to his lifelong love of metal.
Metal Lords will premiere on Netflix on April 8, 2022.
