In the wings
There are outposts of The Store, Alex Eagle’s fiercely curated retail concept, at Soho Farmhouse, Soho House Berlin and 180 The Strand – so it was no surprise when she called in. to the brand as a collaborator here. But the playful and confident work of Eagle and Hodges is entirely theirs: mixing bright colors with chinoiseries, low 70s forms with the high camp of ruffled skirted armchairs.
The hotel is divided into the original Mansion House and the Riverside Boathouse (the last Garden Wing will be ready in summer 2022). The 10 rooms in the main house are most interesting. Each is different, some with an imposing wood-paneled bed frame or intricate stained-glass windows. And in every room there are shades of Soho House, with Martinis, Negronis, and Old Fashioneds pre-mixed by cut-glass tumblers on marble coffee tables, and Cowshed potions in the bathroom. .
Food and drink
Winter River House has a familiar hit list of dirty burgers, roast chicken, and pizza (heirloom zucchini and tomato; black truffle taleggio), brought to life by pop-ups – September 2021 saw Akira Japan House getting ready. Yakitori and karaage. In the main hotel, The Terrace and The Parlor serve dishes with Italian accents, rich in vegetables from the walled garden (catch of the day over a wood fire with cabbage pappardelle, say, or quinoa salad with kale). The wine list is pleasantly English, from the sparkling Bolney Estate Cuvee Noir in West Sussex to the fruity reds of nearby Stanlake Park.
Who comes here?
A non-contentious but curious mix of Windsor families who have stayed where before and after the renovation for lazy lunches, and fashionable couples who head to the Winter River House to spam their social media followers.
The 35-acre pristine waterfront grounds, which also hide tennis courts. And in 2022, a sculpture park.
We do not like
The two ’70s wings aren’t the prettiest – a bit like an Oxbridge college with an extra dorm. But the ivy is growing outside and the interiors are beautiful.
