Chicago jangle-pop band CalicoLoco release their sharpest single yet

Since 2019, the six local jangle-pop musicians CalicoLoco have released singles whose intelligent and rigorous songwriting sensibility reminds Gossip Wolf of 80s British indie-pop masters such as Prefab Sprout and Aztec Camera. Last month, the group released their most edgy single to date, “The Bad Hair Day,” tinged with emotion and ready for radio. On Friday, March 11, CalicoLoco performs at Cafe Mustache on a bill with California indie singer-songwriter Porkboii, who they collaborated with on the dreamy 2021 single “Spoken Word,” and band locals Velcro Lewis . This wolf keeps his paws crossed as they team up for a star gig!

Last week, Variety announced the news veteran music publicist Cary Baker will retire this month after 42 years in the business. VarietyBaker’s tribute to Baker details his contributions to Americana, blues, and rock, but overlooks the first piece of published music writing he ever wrote: Baker grew up in Chicago, and as a high school student in the fall of 1971, he sent the Reader a story about slide guitarist and Maxwell Street regular Blind Arvella Gray. Baker’s article appeared in the paper’s 11th issue on January 7, 1972, and he quickly helped Gray find a label for what turned out to be his only album (Baker also reissued it on his imprint Conjuroo in 2005). Baker’s last day as a publicist will be Friday, March 18; he will close Conqueroo, the public relations company he started in 2004. After some rest, he plans to focus on writing music history books.

Gossip Wolf has been obsessed with local dance trio Purelink ever since they released the gripping ambient EP Happiness / Pivot Last spring. On Friday, Purelink producer Tommy Paslaski aka Concave Reflection released a feature film titled The best people are like water, whose serene beatscapes stay comfortably inside the Purelink comfort zone. The album was released via Australian label Theory Therapy, which increased the digital release with a cassette edition of 50 copies.

On the Bandcamp page for The best people are like waterTommy Paslaski of Concave Reflection describes his creative process: “Layer and layer until I have a coherent thought.
