“Ho chobbar de chehre utte noor dassda, ni ehda uthuga jawani ch janaja mithiye (All is revealed in the eyes of the young boy that the funeral will take place in his youth),” the lyrics go. The song was said to be a tribute to rapper Tupac Shakur, who was shot dead in his car aged 25 in 1996.
Surprisingly, this is how 28-year-old Sidhu was killed by gangsters in broad daylight in Jhawahar Ke village in Mansa district. Thirty rounds of bullets were sprayed on him – the pattern was clear.
Punjab’s gun violence and gangster culture sent shivers down the spine of fans and friends. It has been repeatedly said that artists in Punjab are often subjected to “hate comments, threats and negative energy” for simply doing what they love to do. Parmish Verma, known for songs like ‘Gaal Ni Kadni’, actor-singer Gippy Grewal and songwriter Karan Aujla are among the leading Punjabi artists who have been threatened by gangsters in the past.
Recently, Mika also confirmed the trend by pointing out that “many Punjabi singers including Gippy Garewal and Mankirt Aulakh have also received threats. And the incident should be a wake-up call for everyone.”
A Punjabi singer on condition of anonymity told IANS that artists in the state should stop writing songs about gangsters, guns and fighting.
The singer noted, “Our culture has changed and we should be blamed for it. I don’t know why rappers or songwriters like to call themselves gangsters on their albums. Who are the gangsters? Are they ready for something Why make this crop famous for no reason?
He stressed that Punjabi culture “is about love and happiness”. This, he says, should be the theme of the songs. “Why are guns needed? We need to change the way from guns and gangsta culture to our own Punjabi culture,” he said.
In 2020, Moose Wala was arrested by Punjab Police under the Arms Act after being charged with promoting gun culture. The action was taken for his song ‘Panj Golyan’.
“I didn’t want to drag this gun issue out right now,” the singer said. “But when will we understand it? What happened with Sidhu (murder) cannot be justified. The whole industry is in shock till this day. He was a young man with young ideas. mother has lost her loving son. A father has lost his proud son. . RIP Sidhu you will be missed.” Exactly the thoughts of the murdered singer’s countless admirers.
