Official press release:

Formed in 2019, the rise of Canada Gutvoid was nothing if not meteoric. The Toronto natives have digitally released their debut EP, Astral Bestiarylater that fall and caught the attention of Blood Harvest, who then released it physically in 2020. And for good reason: ominously teeming, Gutvoid produced a world devouring death metal which duly devoured the entire listener. More than a three-song/24-minute sonic world unto itself, Astral Bestiary was a statement of purpose from a bold yet pure DEATH METAL band.

Continuing that momentum, the even bolder digital single “Forbidden City Beneath the Crypt” later in 2020, and the absolutely gelatinous Four dimensions of auditory terror a four-way split shared with Blood Spore, Coagulate and Soul Devourment, highlighting Gutvoid’s slimy, hallucinogenic roots. The stage was therefore set for the inevitable first feature film…

And now it comes bearing the disturbing title Duration of horizons without light. From the outset, this titanic recording bears the mark of Gutvoid’s still fresh sound: panting, dizzying, spiraling like thick tar smoke. And yet, the heightened sense of clarity that the quartet only alluded to before takes flight here; Duration of horizons without light lures and then ushers the listener in with a sort of yearning, come-here melody underpinned by both melancholy and mischief. The fact that the execution has somehow tightened up even more – really, Gutvoid’s chops were exemplary before – allows these doom-steeped ruminations to cut through sharper than ever, giving even the most stuck-in-quicksand passages to give a thrilling movement. But, rest assured that songwriting through Duration of horizons without light is always so patient; linear to the very end, each passage conveys its feel and then slips into the next with a grace quite unlike such empty sounding.

It is not hyperbole to suggest that Duration of horizons without light is one of the most comprehensive death metal debuts in recent memory. To celebrate its grand arrival, Blood Harvest will also be making a limited run of Astral Bestiary on vinyl with the previously digital-only “Forbidden City Beneath the Crypt” included as a bonus feature. This is indeed the year of Gutvoid.
