Make them suffer in collaboration with Courtney LaPlante on “Contraband”

Australian metal band Make Them Suffer has teamed up with upstart rocker Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox to deliver moments of pure banging mixed with a hypnotic melody on the new song “Contraband”.

This is the first collaboration of the band’s career and it’s a good thing because LaPlante definitely leaves his mark on the song. The end result is a track that leaves its mark, cradling you to the heart with a little bit of sweetness to even things out. The track is also notable for what the band calls their “floppy finger riff”.

“’Contraband’ gathered around one of the riffs of the song that we aptly named the ‘floppy fingers’ riff, explains singer Sean Harmanis. “We actually had this [riff] in the bank since early 2016. As the song came together, we decided this was a great opportunity to include Make Them Suffer’s very first guest feature, and we wouldn’t could not have chosen better than Courtney! It was a pleasure to work with her and she showed such great enthusiasm for the song and its parts. “

As for the subject of the song, Harmanis adds: “In terms of the lyrics, the song is about everything and nothing at the same time. It’s about relationships with friends and family. But it’s also a low-key political song, as well as an expression of the frustrations surrounding COVID and its impact on our lives, especially as members of the music community. “

He concludes: “‘Contraband’ is an accumulation – the result of two years without musical catharsis.” Take a closer look at the lyrics and video below and grab the track here.

Make Them Suffer with Courtney LaPlante, lyrics to “Contraband”

They want you dead.
They want you to be done.
They want you to sign, seal and deliver.
Sent to the grave.
An extinguished flame.
Another twisted soul to give up.

Suppressed, another patient is admitted.
Depressed, another lie contradicts.
Regress, go get no fucking answers.
Except to save yourself at the expense of another

Smuggling won’t protect you,
when there’s a contract on your head.
So tell me why are you killing all your friends.
Contraband will not protect you.
Not when the war is in your head.
So tell me why are you killing all your friends.

Phantom, lifeline,
Do you want to come and save me.
They want you dead.
They want you to be done.
They want you to sign, seal and deliver.
Sent to your end.
An extinguished flame.
Another twisted soul to give up.

You keep telling us to die for something, and yet you fight for nothing.

Phantom, lifeline,
Getting help from you is a fine line.
Phantom, lifeline,
You could build a house out of all your lies.
Smuggling won’t protect you,
when there is a contract
on your head.
So tell me why are you killing all your friends.
Contraband will not protect you.
Not when the war is in your head.
So tell me why are you killing all your friends.

Ghost, lifeline, will you come and save me?
Choose me, choose me, choose me.

They want you dead.
Pray for the end.
